What Is High-Frequency Fertigation?

High-frequency fertigation is the frequent watering of cannabis plants with fertilizer-infused water. Fertigation is the practice of adding fertilizer to irrigation water used for cannabis plants. This high-frequency fertigation allows cannabis plants to grow fast and efficiently because the water already includes the nutrients and the plants do not have to seek nutrients from the soil.

The high-frequency fertigation process typically means irrigating cannabis plants with nutrient-filled water as many as five times a day. This practice helps expedite the growing process more than just the traditional watering schedule of a few times a week. 

What Grow Process Is Required For High-frequency Fertigation?

High-frequency fertigation requires a grow medium that consists of air pockets to prevent the plant’s roots from “drowning” because of a lack of oxygen. High-frequency fertigation takes advantage of a special grow medium — coco and perlite — that makes sure the plant’s roots receive enough oxygen regardless of the amount of water. The growing medium provides a preferred ratio of air and water, which allows faster growth compared to the typical soil-based plants. 

Coco coir consists of ground coconut husks with a brown appearance and stringy fibers. Coco coir is usually devoid of any nutrients and has a texture similar to soil. It has superior water and air retention properties, which give roots optimal access to nutrients, water and oxygen. This allows the plant’s roots to retain moisture and nutrients, without saturating or drowning the roots. 

Perlite is a lightweight, sterile granular material that is white in color. It is extremely porous, allowing it to absorb water.

What Are the Pros and Cons of High-frequency Fertigation?

The Pros

  • Nutrients are provided to the cannabis plant uniformly and efficiently
  • Crop growth and yields are greater 
  • Increases the efficiency of water and nitrogen use
  • Reduces labor for cultivation because the process is typically automated to provide fertigation at regular intervals

The Cons

  • Requires consistent care to monitor any flaw in the system that may result in yield loss and inconsistent growth
  • Increased risk of clogging in the drip irrigation system that is typically used for this process

Why Is High-frequency Fertigation Important for Cannabis Growers?

Cannabis growers like high-frequency fertigation because it allows them to supply cannabis plants with the precise nutrients they need. The process allows more robust growth because plants do not have to use energy to seek nutrients. Fertigation provides them with a steady stream of nutrients necessary for growth.

For growers, high-frequency fertigation gives them more control over the nutrients provided to the plants and allows for more consistency in the grow process. It also gives growers more control over the nutrient element ratio (NER), Electrical Conductivity (EC), and pH. The process allows growers to consistently add the preferred nutrient solution that is set to the ideal levels of NER, EC, and pH.
