If you have a very small apartment, no yard or live in really poor weather, there is still ways to garden. If you live in a place where it rains a lot, use a trellise in order to keep plants elevated so that they’re not drowned in puddles. If you don’t have a yard, you can always grow indoor by buying an automated growing system. If you live in a dry climate, you’ll need to retain as much moisture as possible to grow your plants healthily.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trellises are a great tool to take advantage of vertical space, especially if you have a small yard.
  • If you don’t have a yard, you can always grow indoors using an automated growing system.
  • If you live somewhere that is dry, you really need to focus on retaining as much moisture as possible to grow your crops.

“It’s possible to garden nearly anywhere, no matter how little space you have or how extreme the temperatures get — as long as you have the right tools.”

Indoor agriculture may not sound like it is the more prominent method of growing cannabis but it is being widely used because of the rich soil that can be provided indoors and out of the elements. The soil in the outside world needs a lot of nourishment and attention and that is why people who are growing cannabis are moving their operation indoors to have better production in that aspect. Growing indoors give you a bit of power of what nature has available.

Key Takeaways:

  • RII had developed a template that is energy efficient and will reduce the energy used to grow cannabis.
  • One of the benefits of growing indoors is that it allows for control of the climate and lighting.
  • Indoor agriculture depends a lot on creativity and technology and as this technology advances, we’ll see more indoor sustainable growing.

“The new regulations will affect lives and cause ripples for countries and states which consider California policies as a model for their own legislation. RII, is a non-profit formed to advance cannabis resource efficiency and has expertise in industry data and policy assessing environmental impacts and best practices associated with cultivation resource issues.”

Are you a consumer-level grower or an industrial level grower? It is one of the first questions that should always be asked before you start shopping for supplies and/or equipment. If you are searching for cannabis grower racks then you will find that there are a lot of consumer-level products in the marketplace. This could be extremely frustrating for a person who needs industrial level growing supplies. A person who needs industrial growing supplies will be forced to sort and sift through the high amount of consumer-level products before finding anything that may be useful for them. If they get lucky enough to find a product then they will have to be conscientious enough to note what the name of the product is so that they can find it again later.

The problem is the technical jargon in both industries. As a grower, you have your own terminology that is accepted within your industry. For example, you could be searching for something like cannabis grower racks and have that be an acceptable term in your industry. However, that will trigger a local grow shop or search engines to deliver you consumer-grade products first. You will likely have to modify the term in order to get to the products you need. If you need industrial level products then you are more likely to find them under their industry name which is pallet rack. The introduction of “pallet” into your keyword, which happens to be those cannabis grower racks, can help you get to the industrial versions quicker.

What is a pallet rack and why is it called a pallet rack? Pallet rack is what it sounds like it is when you hear the name. It is a shelving system designed to hold pallets of products. However, over time that has changed in order to support various types of products as well. Your product, cannabis, can be grown in trays that are specially made to fit in pallet racks. In fact, that is what most professional growers do. They grow within pallet racks because it gives them more space than the consumer level products. It also gives them the ability to stack their products vertically to the ceiling, or, at least, to the limit that is allowed by your local government.

Your local government is going to try to get involved in your business via permitting for this type of storage system. The classification of a pallet rack, as far as the government is concerned, a storage system, therefore you could be, depending on your local government, beholden to the same roles as anyone else who uses a pallet rack to store their product. Vertical storage may be controlled, depending on your local government, because it could be a fire hazard and your sprinkler system has to be able to reach the lower levels of your product in order to suppress a fire. If you have not dealt with a pallet rack permit process then it is smart to get help from someone who knows how the system works and has done it successfully before.

If this all sounds confusing then you can shortcut the problem by talking to someone who is well versed in all of this by giving us a call at 503 878-7543. You can also have a look at these vertical grow racks or mobile grow racks for your business if you feel like you do not need to talk to anyone.

You probably do not want a farm where someone can say, “that’s a cute little farm.”

One of the questions you need to ask yourself when you are looking at a mobile hydroponic farm set up is how mobile do you need it to be? The answer to that question will tell you what type of equipment you need in order to have the farm that you see in your head. If you are one of those beginners or smaller growers then your setup is probably going to look a lot different than someone who is established and has a bit more money.

The beginner grower is probably going to be okay using those chrome shelves you find in most one-stop shops. We are not even talking about one-stop grow shots either. You can find these in most stores like Target or on Amazon. However, what you learn very quickly once your business starts to get traction is that the shelving units are not good for industrial applications. Sure, you could buy more to have more space to grow but another truth about these systems is that they tend to get annoying. There are things on the shelving unit that will break down. They do not feel very good when they go over bumps or holes. Keep in mind that this is even true sometimes on the sidewalk divots. You are aware of the environment that you are growing in and you know where you will need to transport your product. If it is bumpy at all or you think you might be prone to spilling your products then you may not want to get any of those chrome rolling shelving units. They may not be well-suited to the application that you have in mind. If you are going to get any rolling units then you should consider rolling shelving units that are more up to the task and are more robust.

Most of those shelving units can only hold up to 800 lbs. If you get an industrial strength rack then you will find that you can hold up to 2500 per level.

The problem with those shelving units is that they were developed just for consumers. They are not meant for industrial or business crop growing levels. Again, they could be forced into that level through the acquisition of many of these items but that is not setting yourself up for success in the future. If you grow to the level where you can be associated with the phrase, “industrial farm”, or have any aspirations of reaching that level then you should start setting up for that movement now. Most of those shelving units can only hold up to 800 lbs. If you get an industrial strength rack then you will find that you can hold up to 2500 per level. A good thing because you already know that you have a lot of equipment that you need in order to grow your product.

A mobile hydroponic farm is something that you can obtain but you have to make sure that you are getting the right equipment or you are setting yourself up for failure in the future. You could get consumer-level products but you will not have a true farm that you can be proud to show off to friends and family. Competitors can be jealous of when they see it. You probably do not want a farm where someone can say, “that’s a cute little farm.” You want someone to be able to look at your operation and go now, “now that an industrial farm for sure.” You do not use consumer-level products to get that type of reaction or that type of profit level either. You want to make sure that you are using industrial-strength mobile racks that can handle the applications that you are going to ask them for in the future.

Grocery stores are, increasingly, turning to indoor farms for their produce. They are trying to reduce the miles between the farm and the consumer through the use of these farms. Big companies like Kroger have strategic partners like Infarm who grow some of the produce in the store. The article says that the vertical farming market will grow to 9.96 billion by 2025.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stores are going more towards locally grown produce through indoor farms or by growing their own in-store.
  • Kroger has partnered with Infarm to grow produce in the store.
  • The move is being done because grocery stores are trying to limit the amount of time between the farm and when the consumer gets the product.

Quote: “U.S. consumers will place increased pressure on manufacturers to produce locally in 2020 and beyond, according to new research from New York-based Nielsen, which finds that local ingredients and food sourced and produced close to home are important to nearly half (48%) of consumers.” (Strailey, 2020)

Why Urban Gardening is the New Hot Bed for Investors

Many studies say that a lot of produce and food is wasted on the way to people’s tables. In fact, a lot of people say that up to 20 to 30% of food is wasted during the transportation of that food to people’s tables. A lot of waste is happening just because of the distance between the farmer and the consumer. You are not just losing food but you are also losing the potency of the food because of the amount of time that is used to transport the goods to the grocer and then to your plate. The food might not even be coming from US farmers as well. The Natural Defense Resource Council says that people in the US eat food from five different foreign countries every time they have a meal. You can imagine the amount of waste that is created from the byproducts of gas being spent and also the amount of food potency wasted transporting food to a whole different country. You might start getting the sense of what the problem is and why people are starting to look to indoor gardening. Many people now believe that indoor gardening is the future of farming.

The Opportunity Gap

What does any of this mean for you? It means that there is a massive opportunity to step into right now. There is more demand than there are suppliers right now. Multiple people in the indoor gardening space are not really making produce at this moment. They are growing alternative products and there is nothing wrong with that but the investment money is not there right now. Investors are looking at indoor farming methods as a way to feed many people over time even though they may not have the best place to grow in their area. For example, the UAE is in an area known mostly for deserts. The last thing you would think that they would be able to do is to grow tomatoes. However, because of this emerging technology they have been able to do it. It has caught the eyes of many investors around the world who now believe that indoor gardening may help solve the food shortage problem we are about to encounter.

The truth is that there are 9 billion people on the planet and we are using up resources. We are growing the population while not replacing or reusing the resources we already have in our hands. What that means is that we are running out of natural resources that we can use to feed people. Technologies like hydroponic and aquaponic growing methods are going to become more necessary in the future.

There is a supply and demand opportunity gap that you can fill. Right now, the demand is high but the supply is low for indoor gardeners. The nice thing is that, because the industry is in its infancy right now, you can still build up the knowledge you need to make a splash in the industry and get the attention of investors. Obviously, it would be better if you already knew how to contact these investors or if you have someone on your team who already knows how to contact them. You are no different than any start-up urban gardener right now no matter which of those two cases you find yourself. You can learn what you need to learn right now. You can show that you know how to grow things and that experience will show an investor you are competent. Once you figure out how to contact them or they take notice of you then you will be a strong candidate for an investment they want to make.

Sooner or later, you will grow beyond a small operation. Once you do that, you are going to need to look for products that will allow you to scale up. You are going to have to look at growing in pallet racks with grow trays to maximize your profitability. In fact, you will, literally, be scaling up. You will find, in the future, that vertical farming is the best way to get the maximum amount of money in the shortest amount of time possible. You will be doing it with limited space as well which helps keep your overhead low. It is this kind of efficiency that investors want to see built into their investments. It will make you look smart and possibly smarter than your competition who are also competing for that investment money.

If you are looking to get into this business then you might as well start looking towards the future. Looking at mobile grow racks and pallet rack made to grow produce is smart. You want to draw up a business plan because that makes you look good in the eyes of investors. The truth is that most people do not want to take a risk. If you are smart about looking like you are capable of minimizing risk then you are more likely to get the money in the future. You may even be able to convince them, right then and there, to give you capital to start your business. Either way, the time to get into the business is now.

If you have a grow of any kind of significance and you are at the level where you are using pallet-sized grow trays or flood tables then you probably have wondered how secure that tray is on there. The truth is that the tables or trays are heavy. You have water there, you have the plant there, you could have soil there as well. You also have to factor in the weight of the lights and anything else you have deemed worthy to attach to the shelf to make your life easier. One false move in a certain way and it may come down unless you are extremely careful.

Damage:

If you have a decent grow size then you are talking about a lot of possible damage not only to the shelf but to you as well. We are probably looking at you losing a toe or, depending on where it lands, breaking something, at least. Even if you were to get out of the way in time then you are still looking at losing a lot of products which is not something you probably want to do. Your product represents time and money. Not only the money you lose by not being able to sell the product because of damage but the money you put into growing it. You have electricity, water, supplements, and soil, if you use any of that in your grows.

What do you do?

You get as safe as possible. You make sure that your shelves are secure. You can easily do that by using a beam safety clip on your grow rack. In fact, if you want to be extra secure, and we would recommend it then you should also think about adding a flood table rack safety drop pin. You can find that product by clicking here.

Why have both of the products?

The truth is that the safety clip can get dislodged over time and a rack that was once safe can go dangerous over time. It is then and there that it is good to have the back up of the beam safety drop pin. If the first mechanism fails then you have the second one there protect you, your loved ones, or your workers. A little bit of redundancy never hurt anyone especially when it comes to protecting you or anyone who works around you.

Want to get one or both of these products? You can click the link here to see the safety clip for your grow rack. You can click this link to see the safety pin for your flood table.

Come on down and check out our Booth #644 at the Indo Expo at the Portland Expo Center. The show runs Saturday and Sunday, August 4 & 5, 2018. Saturday is for B2B / Industry Professionals, and Sunday is open to the general public. See www.indoexpo.com for details.

Be sure to stop by. We’re in booth 644. We’ll see you there!

Here’s our booth at the Cannabis Collaborative Conference

We had a great time at the Cannabis Collaborative Conference at the Portland Expo Center on January 23-25, 2018. We set up a display of our Vertical Grow System and Botanicare 4’x8′ Grow Trays. You know, the funny thing about those grow trays, is that everyone knows that they are (obviously) 4ft x 8ft, but they incorrectly assume that they need to buy a 48″ deep Garden Rack system to fit their trays. In reality, the 4′ x 8′ Botanicare grow trays are 4′ x 8′ on the outside dimension, but they are designed to fit on 42″ deep racking. The trays actually have a few inch lip on the front edge of the tray that aids in drainage (which makes it ideal for using it in a hydroponics application), and this lip hangs over the front support beam. If you put those 4′ x 8′ Botanicare trays on a 48″ rack, you’ll find that you have a few inches of wasted space and you’ll have spent more money buying bigger racking than you needed. But I digress.

The conference was a huge success. We were able to show both our heavy-duty garden rack system (which works great for all growing stages), and our lighter-duty system (which most people use for cloning). Overall, we found a lot of people who were very interested in our vertical grow system for maximizing their cannabis yield.

We also really enjoyed getting to know the other vendors that were exhibiting at the show. It’s a tight-knit community that we’re all apart of, and we really enjoy making new connections and new friendships. The hosts of the conference were also super cool, and they did a great job putting the show together. We’ll definitely be back next year!

We’ve got some other conferences and tradeshows coming up over the next few months, so stay tuned on the blog and come check out our booth at the next show!

In the meantime, I could use your help. Is it just me, or does our booth look a little bland? Leave a comment if you have any ideas on how we could jazz it up a little. Thanks!
